The
Ekco U159 is an a.c/d.c mains valve radio, which was made in 1953. It has
long & medium wave band tuning, and is housed in a plastic cabinet.
It is a variation in colour to the model U122 from the same year. I believe
that there were other colour variations & associated model numbers to
suit.
The valve line up is as follows:-
UCH42, UF41, UBC41, UL41, UY41.
The plastic cabinet top has a grille for ventilation, but this is of a poor
design as I have known the grilles to distort.
When I first obtained this radio, it had incorrect rotary control knobs
on the front, they should be as seen from the photograph with the skirting.
I eventually removed and replaced the temporary ones. They can be difficult
to remove to access the radio for servicing, and when replacing them some
grease should be applied to the control shafts, so making it easier for
future removal (prone to breakage). The wave change switch lever also can
be prone to breakage.
The scale lamps are of an unusual value, two at 6 volts 60 milliamps.
